Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Many patients assume that as long as they are brushing and flossing consistently, they don’t need to visit their dentist for a checkup and cleaning twice a year. That’s not the case! Without routine exams, early warning signs of oral cancer, cavities, and gingivitis can fly under the radar, wreaking havoc on your oral and overall health in the process. Plus, the dental tools you have at home can leave behind plaque. In short, these biannual visits are crucial because they help catch and prevent dental problems.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

During your dental checkup, Dr. Zac Young will catch up with you (or get to know you if you’re a new patient!) and ask you a few questions pertaining to your oral health. Then, he will take a look at your X-rays, conduct an oral cancer screening, and examine the condition of your teeth, gums, and existing dental work. Once this entire process is complete, he will review his findings with you and, if necessary, create a treatment plan for any follow-up restorative care.

The cleaning will likely take up the majority of your appointment. At this time, one of our friendly dental hygienists will clear away plaque and tartar from between your teeth, along your gumline, and the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. Along the way, they will provide you with tips on how to maintain your smile from home so that tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems don’t surface. They’ll also floss and polish your teeth, so your smile feels squeaky clean when you leave our office!
