What is Direct Bonding?

Put simply, direct bonding is a cosmetic treatment for small smile flaws. Using tooth-colored composite resin, it can seamlessly cover an affected tooth’s distorted areas. That means it can hide stains, chips, cracks, and more.

Generally, direct bonding only takes a single dental visit. (There are, however, cases where extensive tooth damage requires several visits.) All it takes is for Dr. Young to apply the resin, sculpt it, and harden it with a UV light. Once those steps are done, the treated area will blend seamlessly with adjacent teeth.

Who is a Good Candidate for Direct Bonding?

Typically, almost any patient can qualify for direct bonding. The treatment doesn’t have overly strict requirements. Still, the best candidates are those with only mild tooth flaws. Patients will most benefit from it if they have one (or more) of the following:

  • Minor chips or cracks in teeth
  • Small tooth gaps
  • Moderate to severe tooth stains
  • Irregularly-shaped teeth
  • Small or “stubby” teeth

Even with such issues, though, the best way to confirm candidacy is to consult Dr. Young. He’ll examine your mouth and see whether bonding suits you. If he approves, he’ll then move forward and draft a personalized treatment plan.

The Benefits of Direct Bonding

Should you get direct bonding, you’ll receive its many great upsides. These often include the following:

  • Smooth Procedure – Direct bonding is non-invasive, so it won’t remove any bits of your tooth enamel. For that reason, the treatment is quick and preserves your natural tooth structure.
  • Low-Maintenance – Once treatment is over, you can easily maintain direct bonding effects. All you need to do is brush twice daily, floss once daily, and rinse often with mouthwash. As you stick with these habits, your results should last several years.
  • Versatility – Given its nature, composite resin can cover the whole fronts of teeth. As such, direct bonding can address a wide range of smile flaws.
  • Cost-Effectiveness – Compared to other cosmetic dental options, direct bonding is pretty inexpensive. It can deliver amazing outcomes at relatively little cost.
